211 Squadron sites
Personal sites about 211 Squadron personnel, all links updated to May 2024:

    Alan Conrad
    The RAF Tourist
    The late
Alan Conrad’s photographs of 211 Squadron, 72 OTU and 230 Squadron, thanks to John Conrad. Called up for RAF service in Spring 1941 aged 20, by October Alan was posted to 211 Squadron at Wadi Gazouza as a GD Clerk in the Adjutant’s Office. Having lived a long, active and happy life, Alan died peacefully in January 2024 aged 102 years.

    George Dunbar
    George died in September
2016. His RAF service from 1937 (with 211 Squadron in the Middle East and Far East, falling captive on Java in March 1942) and long after, as recorded in this vivid obituary by The Scotsman and formerly in the Ross-Shire Journal.

    Philip Ganderton
    FEPoW Memories of Java
Phil Ganderton’s RAF memoirs of RAF service as an Aircraftman, from enlistment in 1940, to 211 Squadron as an Aircraftman in the Middle East as they left for the first terrible Far East campaign, through his captivity and since. Phil’s son-in-law Rod Talboys put Phil’s story together as a fine little work, available on-line on registration with Scribd. Philip C Ganderton died in 2011.

    David Golding
How I Didn’t Win The War
David Golding joined 211 Squadron as a Sgt Observer in Egypt just in time for the long flight to the Far East in Jan 1942, with Sgt
LC Hill and St G Wright, and Cpl Hillman as passenger. They were among the lucky ones, evacuated from Java on Kota Gede on 27 February 1942. Les Hill and David Golding remained close friends up to the time of Les’s death.

Later commissioned and completing a tour with 215 Squadron in India, F/O Golding was awarded the DFC for his navigation skill. His story is recorded on son Paul’s personal website, above. David Golding died on 16 Sep 2019 aged 97 years.

    ES Johnston
From RAF boy apprentice to prisoner of the Japanese
The BBC People’s War collection includes his daughter Amanda’s biography of her late father, Eric Stanley “Johnny”
Johnston. The COFEPOW site records her accounts of the conditions endured by her father and other FEPoWs on Haruku and Ambon.

Eric had joined the RAF in 1936 aged 16, as a boy apprentice at RAF Halton, qualifying there as a Fitter/Armourer. F/Sgt Johnston was posted to the Middle East in November 1941, where he joined 211 Squadron in January 1942 for the Far East. Taken prisoner by the Japanese at the fall of Java in March 1942, he survived and after repatriation remained in the RAF until 1950. Eric Johnston died in November 1989.

    Des Marsh-Collis
    Pictures from Des
Aidan Simon’s archive of the war-time photograph album of his father-in-law,
Des Marsh-Collis, in India and Thailand. Born in Kenya in 1925, after the war Des settled into family life in the United Kingdom. He died in February 1997.

    Stuart Robertson
    The Robbo Clan: Stuart Robertson
Alan Robertson’s webpage for his late father
JS Robertson, who was another 211 taken captive by the Japanese on Java, spending his 21st birthday at Mitsushima PoW Camp in Japan. Surviving captivity he returned to Scotland and family, to become a master printer. Stuart Robertson died in September 1991.

Closed sites and broken links
A fair proportion of personal and non-commercial sites may exist for relatively short spans of years, then close with little or no notice. Copies (or partial copies) of closed sites may still exist in one or more web
archives.

Sites may experience periods of technical difficulty or move, without leaving a redirect page behind. Others re-arrange structure and page URLs without redirects, confounding easy access by bookmarks (official sites are increasingly prone to this). A quick check of the original site, page name or URL through your chosen Search engine or via the US Internet Archive may track the site down.
